01/27: Introduction: Welcome to the Anthropocene
Why learn to write well?
Here’s what you said:
- Because it’s how we determine how we think
- It’s a tool for applying ideas
- How we communicate / express ourselves
- Always contains power dynamics / Standard English is a colonial language and often a gate-keeping tool for exclusion / inclusion
- It can influence & persuade us in positive or negative ways
And here are the results of the in-class survey…
In what ways do you want to improve as a writer?
- I want to be able to make my writing flow really well, and make it easy to read and understand.
- I want to improve on my fluidity with words so I can better convey the message or idea that I am trying to get across.
- My first language is Spanish, so I want my writing to flow better.
- Better structuring and usage
- Improving on organizing my thoughts into structured writing
- Learn to write properly. I don’t even know how to do a thesis. 😐
- I would like to be able to get to my main points faster.
- I wanted to be able to convey my thought and feelings in a concise manner.
- I want to grammatically make sense when I write. My ideas don’t always translate into perfect English when I write an essay. I want to improve my vocabulary when writing.
- I would like to improve my grammar. I would like to finish my [degree], maybe go to grad school or find a job.
- The time it takes me to write a paper. I always write and delete right away because I always think I can write better.
- …I’m lacking vocabulary, proof reading, making a [text] make sense in a conversation. I also want to improve pronouncing some words correctly and improve my handwriting. My goal is to be a better and creative writer by learning more English words.
- My grammar
- Essay construction in English
In terms of this class, what are you most dreading? Why?
- I dread writing.
- Writing.
- I don’t really like writing a lot to be honest. I really prefer quality over quantity.
- The whole class. I’m not good at English even though I was born and raised here.
- A large workload, I don’t like writing a lot and I’m pretty sure there will be a lot of it in this course.
- Having a long paper. I feel as a paper gets longer, I tend to repeat the same information over and over.
- Long papers…
- A paper with length
- Writing a certain # of pages.
- Attendance [because of] “new schedule”
- Lack of constructive ideas, lack of vocabulary
- In terms of this class, I’m mostly dreading about…failing because I, at times, find it hard to accept my failures. I fear [my] writing isn’t good because of lacking vocabulary and I’m terrible at proofreading.
- Reading a bunch of passages that may be too complex to understand or a text I can’t relate to, which leaves me uninterested.
