“Just like that: Do you like cricket?… I had really messed up. Total category mistake. Customs of hospitality are common enough around the world
that, had I been offered the cricket otherwise, I probably
would have accepted it. Of course, it all made sense now.
I knew that caterpillars were a local delicacy—why not
crickets?” (Engelke, Culture pg 26-27)

…This quote stood out to me because my impression of anthropologists as first glance was that their fieldwork was flawless, that they could get the job done. Going into a new environment ready to study culture, prepared for any situation. That impression was shattered by this simple misunderstanding that Engelke made. The second sentence where it says “I had really messed up” shows that Engelke feels a sense of embarrassment and misguidance. He feels this way because he studied them yet made a simple mistake regarding their culture. The sentence ” Of course, it all made sense now.
I knew that caterpillars were a local delicacy—why not
crickets?” tells the audience that these insects were being snacked on so and was an eye opener for the writer. This sentence also tells me that the writer isn’t in a regular community because he says that bugs are treats around the neighborhood. I am taking Anthropology so i picked up that he is studying a group of people with a different culture because of the way he talks about their, “local delicacy”.
